THE MOST FAMOUS VENETIAN'S PAINTERS: GIORGIONE
The plague cut short the brilliant career of Giorgione in 1510. Correspondence between Taddeo Albano and Isabella d'Este, determined to acquire a painting from the master, sites Giorgione's death in this year and Vasari inserts Giorgione's biography between those of Leonardo da Vinci and Correggio. Scanty documentation has resulted in much discussion about the identification and dating of authentic paintings by this great Venetian master. What little biographical evidence there is suggests that Giorgione was in Venice in the years before his death. An inscription dated June 1506 in the verso of the famous Laura (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum) quotes Giorgione as «cholega de maistro vizenzo chaena», referring to the Venetian painter Vincenzo Catena. In August 1507, the Consiglio dei Dieci agreed to pay 20 ducats to Giorgione for the execution of a painting for the Sala Audentina, in the Doge's Palace. In 1508 we know he was working with Titian for the decoration of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. Among the most precious paintings by Giorgione still in Venice are the so called La Vecchia and the mysterious Tempesta, both conserved in the Academy Galleries.
